The Sylph Unwinds
A photo series I have just started, which aims to portray the ethereal, lovely, “sylph” as a symbol of the long standing social/psychological construct of the “ballerina”. To break the idealized and objectified picture of feminine detachment and beauty, and replace it with what dancers really are: People.
Dancers are people and that’s what makes them even more incredible. I mean, they’re human beings but 90% of the world’s human beings wouldn’t be able to train for so many long hours while still looking pretty as dancers do everyday.
Do you have a tag for these? If no, Could you make one so it’s easier to follow them?
These gifs are all from developés from Larissa Lezhnina and Alina Somova as the sugar plum fairy in the nutcracker.
As you all can see Alina Somova’s developés are much higher than Larissa Lezhnina’s developés, but does that make her a better dancer? I myself think Larissa Lezhnina is a better dancer, because she didn’t need hyperextension to look good. I’m pretty sure that if Alina Somova had the extensions of Larissa Lezhnina, she wouldn’t be principal at the Mariinsky.
PS I am not sure if developé is with 1 or 2 p and I have no idea what the plural of developé is…
